As summer continues and the weather warms, we may become less reliant on our boilers and wider central heating systems, but this doesn’t mean our plumbing problems are over!
Unbeknown to most, there are several plumbing challenges homeowners face during the summer months as well as a range of plumbing maintenance to-dos to be getting on with. Here we share our top tips to keep your plumbing system ship-shape all summer long.
Water usage generally rises as the weather warms, with the filling of inflatable pools, watering of plant life, and increased number of showers seeing the average home consume so much more. Take steps to conserve water to reduce the impact summer can have on our waterways.
You can do this by spending less time in the shower, switching the tap off when you brush your teeth, only running your washer or dishwasher when you have a full load, and filling up the kettle less when you make your daily brews.
We recommend investing in a water butt to collect rainwater too. Rainwater can then be used to wash your car or water the garden. You can also do the same with ‘grey water’, which is waste water that can be recycled after being used for washing or cooking. By conserving water, you can put less strain on your plumbing system to keep it in tip top condition.
Checking for leaks isn’t a home maintenance must that should be paused during summer. In fact, due to the damage higher temperatures cause to old and weak pipes, leaks should be checked for more frequently. When checking for leaks, don’t forget to inspect any outdoor taps and hosepipes for damage and wear.
While gutter cleaning and maintenance is a task that most delay until autumn, getting a head start will ensure you can go into the new season with confidence.
Without regular clearing, gutters and downpipes can’t do the job they are meant to, i.e. collecting and carrying rainwater away. They are a vital part of any property’s drainage system and should be kept clear all year round, including during summer.
Another plumbing task you can tackle early is boiler servicing and maintenance. With engineers less busy during the warmer months, there’s no waiting around to get your boiler serviced. With early maintenance, you can take steps to extend the life of your boiler, reduce the risk of breakdown, and enjoy the autumn and winter months with extra peace of mind.
